Figure 5.12 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year any illicit drug dependence or abuse among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (1.27 to 1.88 percent) were Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Washington. States in the next highest group (1.05 to 1.26 percent) were Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Utah, and West Virginia. States in the mid group (0.94 to 1.04 percent) were Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia. States in the next lowest group (0.88 to 0.93 percent) were Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. States in the lowest group (0.62 to 0.87 percent) were Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
