Figure 5.10 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year any illicit drug dependence or abuse among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (5.20 to 6.98 percent) were Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. States in the next highest group (4.78 to 5.19 percent) were Arkansas, California, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the mid group (4.28 to 4.77 percent) were Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming. States in the next lowest group (3.88 to 4.27 percent) were Alaska, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, and South Carolina. States in the lowest group (3.26 to 3.87 percent) were Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
