Figure 5.1 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older, by State, for 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (6.34 to 7.52 percent) were Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and South Dakota. States in the next highest group (5.77 to 6.33 percent) were Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (5.42 to 5.76 percent) were Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Texas. States in the next lowest group (4.99 to 5.41 percent) were Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington. States in the lowest group (4.48 to 4.98 percent) were Arkansas, Maine, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.
