Figure 4.10 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting perceptions of great risk of smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (63.86 to 71.93 percent) were Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Utah. States in the next highest group (61.93 to 63.85 percent) were Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. States in the mid group (60.88 to 61.92 percent) were Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. States in the next lowest group (59.38 to 60.87 percent) were Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. States in the lowest group (56.01 to 59.37 percent) were Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wyoming.
