Figure 4.6 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of cigarettes among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 1999 and 2000. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (17.16 to 22.42 percent) were Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, North Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. States in the next highest group (15.89 to 17.15 percent) were Alaska, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (14.93 to 15.88 percent) were Alabama, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, and South Carolina. States in the next lowest group (13.14 to 14.92 percent) were Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. States in the lowest group (8.85 to 13.13 percent) were California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
