Highlights:

Adolescents and children referred to substance abuse treatment by the educational system were more likely than those referred by the criminal justice system to report primary alcohol abuse but less likely to report primary marijuana abuse.  Schools were more likely than the criminal justice system to refer children and adolescents to substance abuse treatment for the first time (88 vs. 68 percent).  School-aged admissions referred through the educational system were less likely than those referred by the criminal justice system to have completed treatment or transferred to further care (52 vs. 58 percent).

The TEDS Report -School System Referrals to Substance Abuse Treatment, is based on SAMHSA's Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS) conducted by SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use by State.
