Figure 3.2 is a U.S. map showing alcohol use in past month among youths aged 12 to 17, by State: percentages, annual averages based on 2002 and 2003 NSDUHs. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (20.64 to 25.23 percent) were Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the next highest group (18.76 to 20.63 percent) were Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, and New York. States in the mid group (17.57 to 18.75 percent) were Arizona, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. States in the next lowest group (16.05 to 17.56 percent) were Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Texas. States in the lowest group (10.23 to 16.04 percent) were Alabama, Alaska, California, District of Columbia, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah.
